Considered the weakest of all estrogens, estriol binds to the same receptors as the other estrogens and has the potential to block receptor availability.
The blocking effect is not a problem with naturally balanced estrogen levels, but when the estriol level is maintained at a higher than physiological amount–as often occurs with hormone restoration therapy–estriol can block the receptors and reduce the effectiveness of estradiol used for symptom-management.
This scenario may lead to a greater amount of estradiol being used to achieve desired results, resulting in more estrogen metabolites that may in turn affect DNA.
